The Southwest Transitway extends Winnipeg’s rapid transit network with an 11-kilometre dedicated corridor linking downtown to the city’s southwest neighbourhoods, including the University of Manitoba.
The project was designed to accommodate anticipated population growth in southwest Winnipeg that is expected to lead to an estimated 40 per cent traffic increase on Pembina Highway by 2030.
Developed in two stages and completed in 2019, the project created a continuous, transit-only route designed to bypass congestion on Pembina Highway and support long-term growth in one of Winnipeg’s fastest-expanding areas.
Stage 2 of the project used the public-private partnership (P3) model to add 7.6 kilometres of new transitway and renewed the Pembina Highway underpass to improve capacity and reliability along this major arterial corridor. The design incorporated multiple connections to surrounding neighbourhoods, the University of Manitoba and Investors Group Field. It was delivered approximately eight weeks ahead of schedule and approximately $48.6 million under budget, the City of Winnipeg reported in June 2022.
The long-term P3 agreement also includes operations and maintenance for Stage 2 and the previously-built Stage 1 (3.6 kilometres) for 30 years.
