The Mackenzie Valley Fibre Link boosted digital connectivity across the Northwest Territories by delivering a high-speed fibre optic backbone through one of Canada’s most remote regions. The project addressed long-standing limitations in broadband access for northern communities, where residents, businesses and public institutions relied heavily on satellite services that offered limited capacity and high costs.
The fibre system spans more than 1,400 kilometres along the Mackenzie Valley corridor, connecting northern communities to high-speed fibre networks in southern Canada. Following the completion of the all-weather highway to the Arctic coast, the system was extended an additional 140 kilometres to Tuktoyaktuk, creating Canada’s first terrestrial fibre connection to the Arctic Ocean.
Construction required burying more than 1,100 kilometres of high-strength, armoured fibre optic cable through challenging terrain affected by intermittent permafrost. Installation techniques accounted for soil instability, erosion risk and extreme climate conditions. The work demanded careful route planning, specialized construction methods and sustained coordination across vast distances.
Engagement with Indigenous communities along the corridor supported access agreements and construction through traditional territories.
Eligible users include households, small businesses, community organizations and public institutions such as schools, colleges, hospitals and emergency services. A revenue-sharing mechanism applies to certain large commercial customers, balancing affordability with financial sustainability.
Once commissioned, the fibre link enabled reliable delivery of government services, including telehealth, distance education and emergency communications.
In late 2025, the territory was expected to complete the construction of a 137-kilometre fibre extension between Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk, expanding the reach of the Mackenzie Valley Fibre Link. The link replaces microwave-based connectivity with a direct fibre connection to the Arctic Ocean, completing a continuous fibre route from southern Canada to Tuktoyaktuk.
