The Centre hospitalier de l’université de Montréal project brought together three major teaching hospitals (Hôtel-Dieu of Montréal, Hôpital Notre-Dame and Saint-Luc Hospital) into a single, integrated academic health campus in downtown Montréal.

This high-tech centre for specialized care, research and teaching serves approximately 1.7 million people across Québec.

Developed in multiple phases, the complex spans more than 330,000 sq. metres and forms the anchor of Montréal’s health district.

The campus includes a 24-storey main hospital building with 772 private patient rooms, 39 operating theatres, advanced diagnostic and treatment areas, including facilities for robotic surgery, neurosurgery, transplants and oncology. Emergency, ambulatory and critical care services are supported by centralized laboratories, imaging and clinical support spaces.

Operational efficiency was a central design objective. Automated guided vehicles move equipment and supplies throughout the campus, while extensive pneumatic tube networks support the rapid delivery of medications, blood samples and clinical materials. Cancer treatment areas include state-of-the-art linear accelerators that enable precise and efficient radiotherapy.

The CHUM Research Centre opened early in the program and now functions as a major knowledge hub, strengthening links between clinical care, teaching and innovation. Sustainability measures include reduced water consumption, energy-efficient building systems and a ventilation strategy that supplies 100 percent fresh air throughout the hospital. Together, these elements position the CHUM as one of the largest and most advanced healthcare facilities in North America and a long-term catalyst for medical innovation and urban renewal in Montréal.
