The Bayers Lake Community Outpatient Centre is a major component of Nova Scotia’s plan to modernize health-care infrastructure under the QEII New Generation Project.

Located on a 6.1 hectare (15-acre) site in the Bayers Lake business park, the 12,449 sq. metre (134,000 sq. foot) facility consolidates a wide range of clinical and diagnostic services outside Halifax’s core.

As the province’s first P3 health-care project, it plays a central role in the long-term redevelopment of the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre, Atlantic Canada’s largest health sciences complex. The Bayers Lake Community Outpatient Centre houses 104 clinical spaces and accommodates departments such as primary care, renal dialysis, diagnostic imaging, eye care, orthopedic assessment and rehabilitation, specimen collection and post-treatment follow-up services. Twenty-four dialysis stations and a suite of imaging functions, including X-rays and ultrasounds, support high-volume outpatient needs that were previously delivered in multiple sites across Halifax. The location offers convenient access for many patients who travel significant distances for care.

The design responds to the functional requirements of an outpatient facility while placing strong emphasis on orientation, daylight exposure and air circulation. A two-storey “Great Hall” forms the building’s central public space, with south-facing glazing and a feature staircase that distributes natural light into adjoining waiting areas and clinical zones. An opening on the second level extends light to the dialysis program on the first floor, supporting the goal of creating a calm and intuitive environment for patients, families and staff.

Sustainability targets shaped early planning. Architectural, mechanical and electrical systems were selected to meet ambitious performance thresholds aligned with the LEED© Healthcare rating system, supporting the project’s Gold certification.

The site design reflects the centre’s health-focused purpose, with attention to views, pedestrian access and the needs of diverse communities.
